Cultural attractions
If you love cultural attractions, some of the popular fun things to do in Kansas City is to check out some museums. Three of my favourite ones include:
-The American Jazz Museum is a great place to experience and learn all about the history of jazz and jazz legends such as Count Basie and Charlie Parker.
- The Nelson-Atkins Museum is a great art museum where you can see neo-classical architecture and an extensive collection of Asian art.
- The Steamboat Arabia Museum is a great place to be if you’re interested in American history and you can see the largest collection of pioneer artifacts in the US.
Music festivals
When it comes to fun things to do in Kansas City in the summer, there are a variety of music festivals and live performances to keep you busy. One such event is the Jazz in the Woods musical festival.
Jazz in the Woods is a free music festival that features jazz performances from the members of the Overland Park South Rotary Club, and all the proceeds made from the event go to helping local charities.
Sport & Racing events
If you are a sports enthusiast one of the most fun things to do in Kansas City is to attend a game of baseball or American football. By the way, Kansas City is home to the NFL’s Chiefs and the Royals baseball team!
Kansas City also hosts annually the Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament in Kemper Arena, as well as the Nascar Sprint Cup series at the Kansas Speedway racetrack.
Amusement Parks
If you're visiting the city in the summer, one of the most popular things to do is to visit an amusement or water park such as Worlds of Fun Amusement Park
Worlds of Fun Amusement Park is one of the most popular theme parks in Kansas City where everyone can have an amazing time.
The Park features water slides and rides for small children and this park is one of the top fun things to do in Kansas City during the summer months.
Nightlife
Exploring the nightlife is certainly something you should add on your list of fun things to do in Kansas City. In fact, the city of Kansas is known for its Jazz musicians and one of the most popular places to hang out is the Westport area where you'll find many jazz and blues clubs. Two of my best hang out spots are:
- The Blue Room Jazz Club, which is part of the American Jazz Museum, features live jazz entertainment in the evening.
- The Grand Emporium is another popular place in Kansas City where you can enjoy a great time listening to blues music.
A little background on Kansas City
The states of Missouri and Kansas are divided by the Missouri river and the Kansas City airport is north of the state of Kansas.
Also, for those who don’t know, Kansas City metropolitan area is actually divided by a street called the State Line Rd, which runs along the Kansas/ Missouri borders. This means, on one side of the street you are in the state of Missouri, and on the other side of the road you’re in the state of Kansas.
