Planning your trip to Mauritius

You can plan the trip on your own or catch hold of a travel agency. Many travel agencies would be happy to offer you travel packages. Ideally the tour packages are for 6-7 days. You could even ask for 3-4 days package by customizing it. Considering the number of places and travel time required to roam around, you would require a maximum of 4 days. But if you would be staying in a resort and need luxurious time, then you should go for 6-7 days trip.

Check the Mauritian currency as compared to your country’s currency before you travel. 1 Mauritian rupee (MUR) equals 2.05 Indian rupees, 0.02 Euro and 0.03 US dollars. Many stores in Mauritius accept US dollars. However converting some of your money to Mauritian rupees would be a wise decision. If you couldn’t convert the money or forgot to do that at a foreign exchange in your country, then you can find foreign exchange agents at the Mauritius airport and many places in Mauritius as well. But once you step out of the airport it could be difficult for you to find the exchange agents without a guide.


Between May and October, the climate of Mauritius is cool and it would be hot between November and April. But in both the climates the temperature doesn’t reach the extremes.

There are many resorts and hotels in Mauritius. When I had been to the beautiful place, I stayed at Calodyne-Sur-Mer resort. My experience was great. If you are looking for a luxurious stay, go for a resort with beach alongside. You can enjoy water sports offered by the resort. Most commonly offered water sports would be kayaking, pedalos etc.

Port Louis: Port Louis is the capital city of the country. It houses Bagatelle mall – the mall of Mauritius you should not miss. Here you’ll find Food Lover’s Market and many other stores for shopping. Le Caudan Waterfront is a market place at Port Louis. There’s a casino here so the gamblers wouldn’t feel lonely!


Fort Adelaide: Also known as La Citadelle, Fort Adelaide gives a breathtaking view of the city when you reach at the top of the fort. It was built in 1840 and was named after Queen Adelaide.

Marie Reine De La Paix church: In this church you will experience the true serenity of the place. The church is an onlooker of beautiful scenic views which one would regret to miss. The whole city is visible while you stand at the stairs of the church.

Adventure at Ile Aux Cerfs: Ile Aux Cerfs is an island which offers clear water, water sports and beautiful view. You can go for Undersea walk, Parasailing and speed boat ride. In undersea walk, you’ll get the opportunity to go into the water with your whole body inside and feet touched at the base, so that you walk around and view colorful fishes swimming around.

You can touch and feed them and walk inside the water for few minutes. Non-swimmers too can go for it as swimming is not at all required. You would be given an under-sea helmet to keep the water away from your head & face. Parasailing and speed boat ride are also enjoyable. You can opt for pictures clicked by the people who operate these water sports; however they will come at a cost. But memory of a lifetime is a must. The pictures will be given to you in CDs.

Le Port - Manufacturer of Ship Models: Mauritius is well-known for handmade ship models and Le Port is the manufacturer of ship models. You can visit the place where the ship models were made. They also have a showroom with the ship models at display and visitors could buy them.

Trou Aux Cerfs: The Dormant Volcano: Trou aux Cerfs also known as Murr’s Volcano is a dormant volcano. It is located in Curepipe town. Although dormant, it can become active any day.

Seven Colored Earths: Seven Colored Earths is no doubt one of the top 10 places to visit in Mauritius. Seven colored earths have sands of 7 different colors. This makes it rich with nature’s beauty. Visitors are not allowed to walk over the sand; it’s just for viewing. There is a nominal charge for viewing the beauty. There is a walking path alongside the sand so that visitors can view it from all directions. While walking, visitors can also look at huge tortoises adjacent to the sand area.

Chamarel waterfall: It is the highest waterfall in the country. It falls more the height of approximately 85 meters. Visitors can view it from a viewing point which is quite away from the waterfall but gives an amazing view of it.

Hindu temple: This temple is located near Grand Bassin Lake also known as Ganga Talao. This temple is dedicated to multiple Hindi Gods: Lord Shiva, Shri Krishna, Ganpati, Hanuman and many more. It has huge statues of Gods and Goddesses.
