Planning a Trip to Honduras

Planning a trip to Honduras for the first time can be exciting and create a little bit of anxiety too. Being in another country means adapting to the expectations and laws that are locally established.
By planning ahead and taking the time to gather together the right items to bring along, travelers can enjoy their stay and spend time wandering around the area in search of ancient ruins or some of the local villages that continue to live in a world from the past.

What to Pack/What Not to Pack

It is no secret that visiting Honduras comes with its own set of risks. In order to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of local crime, visitors should only bring along the necessities. This is not a place to bring a lot of jewelry or flash around a lot of cash. Instead, cash should be spread out between different people in a group and tucked away to keep it out of sight.

Bringing only one credit card and keeping a majority of a person`s funds in traveler`s checks is a great way to protect the money and avoid local entanglements. While there, women should be sure to pack everything necessary to maintain a certain appearance, especially when traveling into some of the smaller villages.

Be Aware of Cultural Traditions and Expectations

Women especially need to be aware of the cultural norms that surround their appearance and behavior. For example, in many locations, women are expected to wear long skirts or dresses that completely cover their legs.

Other types of apparel may present the wrong idea to people in the area. Aside from what to wear, it is important that women remain with a group and avoid venturing out alone. There are several signals that are often misunderstood when it comes to relationships between men and women and the goal is always to protect oneself from these problems.

Look Into Vaccines

When planning a trip to Honduras, travelers are not required to get vaccinated to enter Honduras. However, most doctors recommend to have the following vaccinations done: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Rabies and Hepatitis B so it's a good idea to have them done before heading out to Honduras.

Because things are set up differently in Honduras, the medical facilities are not always up to the standards that most people are accustomed to. With the help of certain vaccines, it is possible to avoid some of the diseases and medical issues that are commonly found overseas. It's a good idea to have vaccines such as tetanus, MMR, polio and others  up to date.

Make a List of Sites to Visit

The itinerary is, no doubt, one of the top things to remember when planning a trip to Honduras. Despite the preparation and precautions that need to be taken, there are plenty of sites to see in Honduras for a relaxing vacation. The Copan Ruins are a popular stop for people looking to take in the history of the area.

There are underground tunnels to explore and plenty of opportunities for photography. For those interested in diving, the smallest of the Bay Islands, called Utilia, is a great place to go. The local people are friendly and there is a lot to see and do there. Shoppers will appreciate the Mercado Guamilito, an open market area with food, trinkets, and handcrafted items made in Honduras.

Hiking Honduras

Hiking is one of the best ways to get up close to the Honduran countryside and where better to enjoy it than at the national parks?

Honduras boasts great national parks such as Celaque National Park, Pico Bonito National Park, Cusuco National Paek and Cerro Azul Meambar National Park. Alternatively, if you prefer to join a group you can book hiking tours in places such as Las Marias, Roatan and La Ceiba. The great thing about booking hiking tours is that they normally include other activities such as rafting, canopy, snorkeling, etc.
