Switzerland Must See Places
Looking for fun and interesting places to visit in Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein may be one of the smallest countries in the world but it is truly one of the hidden gems in Europe being tucked away between Austria and Switzerland.

Liechtenstein is a popular all year around destination offering hundreds of trails for hiking and biking during the warm months and a great range of slopes for skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

A vacation to Liechtenstein is about enjoying the unspoiled beauty of the country, the stunning Rhine Valley, the charming villages, and cultural attractions such as the Walser Folk Museum in Triesenberg.

Whether you visit Liechtenstein on a romantic weekend break abroad, summer or winter vacation, you'll fall in love with this charming principality. Here it is my list of places to visit in Liechtenstein and what to do there:

Vaduz

Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein and most popularly known for Vaduz Castle (pictured) which is perched atop a steep hill overlooking the city.

Vaduz Castle is the residence of Liechtenstein’s Royal family and the castle is the most renowned symbol in the country as it the motive of many paintings and commemorative stamps.

If you’re interested in art, history and culture, there are also cultural attractions such as the National Art Gallery, FIS Ski Museum and the National Museum where you can check out contemporary art, discover the history of skiing and learn about the natural history of Liechtenstein.

Another of the top places to visit in Liechtenstein is Vaduz’s Stamp Museum since it’s free to enter and showcases all kinds of rare and high quality Liechtenstein stamps for sale.

Apart from cultural attractions and the stunning Vaduz Castle, Vaduz boasts other beautiful landmarks worth checking out such as Town Hall and medieval-style buildings such as the Red House – the oldest house in Vaduz.

Schaan

The town of Schaan is located 5 minutes drive north of Vaduz and it’s another of the popular places to visit in Liechtenstein because of the scenic views of the beautiful Alps you can get fro here.

From Schaan, you can also enjoy day trips to nearby Zurich in Switzerland. Within Schaan there are plenty of sightseeing opportunities and many interesting things to do both indoors and outdoors.

If you love hiking and biking, there are hundreds of trails that you can follow from Schaan that will take you through stunning Alpine scenery.

Schaan also boasts lovely architecture and many historic buildings and churches that you can explore on a walking tour. There is also the Schaan Museum and the DoMus Museum which offer interesting exhibits on history and culture.

Schaan is also the focal point of shopping and nightlife in the country being home to many shopping malls, nightclubs, bars and regular events like music concerts and cultural events throughout the year.

Planken

The village of Planken lies northeast of Schaan and Vaduz and being 15 minutes drive either way, it’s an excellent place for a day trip.

Planken is one of the top places to visit in Liechtenstein for a relaxing getaway, and since the village is located high above sea-level, you can also get stunning panoramic views of the entire Rhine Valley.

Planken is tucked away in the mountains and offers a great opportunity for some serious hiking through steep trails.

Even if you’re not a serious hiker, Planken it’s an excellent place to spend a few days soaking in the natural scenery and taking pictures.

Triesenberg

The village of Triesenberg is located 10 minutes south of Vaduz and being located also above sea level, the village offers breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley as well as the Alps.

Triesenberg is another of the popular places to visit in Liechtenstein for all year around outdoor activities like hiking, skiing biking and bird-spotting.

Apart from outdoor pursuits, if you’re interested in history and culture, Triesenberg offers a great day trip opportunity to learn about the Walser culture at the Walser museum.

Tip

Liechtenstein doesn’t have an international airport that you can land on. Some of the nearest airports include Friedrichshafen and Altenrhein to Liechtenstein, though Zurich
Airport in Switzerland is the most popular one.

If you’re landing at Zurich Airport, you’ll need to take the bus to one of the Swiss towns such as Buchs, and from there take a connecting bus to Schaan in Liechtenstein.
