Best Places to Ski in Slovenia

Eastern Europe is a fantastic and inexpensive ski destination, and Slovenia is easily one of the best places to ski in the region. Another great thing about a ski vacation in Slovenia is that you can ski in Slovenia for a good 150 days (best months for ski are between January and March). Find below, some ideas on places to ski in Slovenia that are within driving distance of Ljubljana:

Kranskja Gora

Kranskja Gora is without a doubt, one of the best places to ski in Slovenia because of its location between Triglav national park (Julian Alps) and the Italian and Austrian borders, which offer an excellent opportunity for day trips.Kranskja Gora is truly a beautiful area and it's mainly popular for downhill skiing. The slopes and trails in Kranskja Gora and its surrounding area are great for both novices and experienced skiers.

The towns of Kranskja Gora and Podkoren are the most popular ski areas. Podkoren is home to “Ski School”, which is a popular place to ski in Slovenia with kids. Ski School is also a good place to take your skis for waxing, learning to ski, and hire ski equipment. If you're an advanced skier, you'll also love it in Podkoren because its mountain is home to the famous World Cup slalom course.

The ski resort in the town of Kranskja Gora is one of the best ski resorts in Slovenia because of its many facilities and verticals of over 1300ft. Kranskja Gora ski resort also has dozens of ski lifts and dozens of ski runs (black, blue and red runs) for beginner and expert levels, as well as a kid’s club, bars, casino, ice skating rink, and a ski school.

Despite its location, Kranskja Gora is very accessible and takes just an hour by car to get to from Ljubljana, where most international flights to Slovenia land.

Bohinj Area

The town of Bohinj is also located within the Julian Alps right on the southeast end of Triglav national park.   Bohinj is very popular because of its close proximity to Ljubljana (around 45 minutes drive). As far as ski areas is concerned, the town of Bohinj is one of the best places to ski in Slovenia because of the many hotels, apartments, bars and restaurants available, so it’s a perfect place to head for a lively ski vacation.

Bohinj is also surrounded but other ski areas such as:

1)Kobla ski resort, which has groomed runs for beginners, a ski school and a ski rental shop. Kobla ski resort can be reached by train from Ljubljana, and it’s only a few minutes walk from the town of Bohinjska Bistrica which is home to many ski apartments and hotels such as Pension Tripic and Bohinj Park Hotel.

2)Vogel ski resort (located inside Triglav national park), and it is located 30 minutes drive by car from Bohinjska Bistrica. Being located inside Triglav national park, Vogel is a fantastic place for cross-country skiing and another great destination in Slovenia for a ski vacation with the family. Krvavec is probably the second most visited ski area in the country and one of the best places to ski in Slovenia because of the variety of trails (17 miles in total) and other ski facilities such as half-pipe, ski jumps, and lots of trails for sledding and snowboarding.

If you fancy a ski vacation in Krvavec, you’ll find that Kranj is the nearest town (just half-hour drive) to the ski resort. Saying this, Krvavec ski resort is only 90 minutes drive by car from Ljubljana so you’re never too far from the hustle and bustle of Slovenia’s capital city.
