Interesting places to visit in South Korea

Interesting places to visit in South Korea
Seoul Top Tourist Sites and Attractions
Looking for interesting places to visit in South Korea this year?

South Korea, perhaps most famously known for the “Electronics District” in Seoul and the stunning Incheon International Airport, is a country where ancient traditions meet technology, giving the country such a unique and dynamic contrast.

Seoul is one of the largest cities in the world and the heart of the country, and boasts hundreds of interesting urban attractions that you can visit.

Having said this, South Korea is definitely more than just Seoul Korea and once you step outside of the capital city, you’ll be rewarded with stunning natural attractions and pristine scenery where you can explore rural South Korea.

South Korea may seem as a small country but with countless attractions you’ll be surprised how much the country has on offer.

Here it is some of my favorite places in South Korea that you’ll enjoy visiting:

Gyeongju City

Gyeongju City is first on my list of interesting places to visit in South Korea because of the amazing burial mounds scattered throughout the city.

One of the most popular mounds is the Cheonmachong mound where you’ll be able to see a replica of the Cheonmachong Tomb.

Gyeongju City also boasts many other interesting sites such as the National Gyeongju Museum, lguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto and Timuli Park where you can enjoy a a traditional horse-drawn carriage tour.

If you’re visiting South Korea exclusively for the cultural attractions, the National Gyeongju Museum is one of the best museums in the country because of the extensive collection of relics belonging to the Shilla kingdom period.

Seoul

Seoul Korea is certainly one of the most popular destinations in the country because many of the interesting places to visit in South Korea are located within the city.

Seoul is known for its skyscrapers and tall buildings, which offer excellent vantage points to get amazing vistas of the city.

Seoul Observation Tower is one of the most popular places to enjoy panoramic views of the city because of the tower’s location on Namsan Mountain.

The Korean Folk Village is next on my list, specially if you're visiting Seoul Korea for the first time because it offers a great opportunity to soak in a bit of culture and learn about traditional Korean life and culture.

Seoul also boasts many museums where you can learn about the history of the country, and one of the best places to do this is at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

If you’re into gadgets and anything technological, you also want to include a visit to the famed Yongsan Electronics Market as it is one of the best places to find an extensive range of electronics within one location.

Seoraksan National Park

If you love natural scenery, you’d love exploring Seoraksan National Park stunning pristine scenery and interesting attractions.

Seoraksan National Park is also on my list of interesting places to visit in South Korea because of Mount Seoraksan, which offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the world.

You can climb to the top of the peak or take a cable car ride to reach the top. However, the hike to the top is more rewarding as you’ll go past interesting attractions such as the Bronze Jwabul Statue which is a gigantic statue of Buddha, similar to the Great Buddha of Kamakura in Japan.

Seoraksan National Park also boasts beautiful Buddhist temples and massive boulder called “Heundeulbawi “ which sits balancing on top of another rock.

Busan

The city of Busan is one of the most interesting places to visit in South Korea because of the stunning cliffs located within Taejongdae Park.

You can get beautiful views from the observatory and marvel at the beautiful evergreen trees.

Taejongdae Park also boasts an amusement park and a port terminal where you can book a boat tour.

Another interesting place to visit within Busan area it’s the Busan Children’s Park as it offers many nature activity opportunities such as hiking through the beautiful hills.

Busan Children’s Park also has an amusement park with neat little attractions for the small ones.

If you’re traveling to Busan during the summer months, the city boasts one of the most popular beach vacation spots in South Korea - Haeundae Beach- which is a thirty-minute bus ride from the downtown area.

By the way, if you’re on a budget, the cheapest way to get to Busan from Seoul is by bus, taking around three hours.

Suwon City

Suwon City is located south of Seoul, and it is an excellent destination to base your holiday in South Korea because of its close proximity to Seoul (around 45 minutes drive).

Suwon City can be an ideal day trip from Seoul, and it is another destination worth adding to the list of interesting places to visit in South Korea because of the amazing Hwaseong Fortress.

Hwaseong Fortress can easily be the highlight of your vacation in South Korea, especially if you’ve never been to a castle wall before.

The fortress features a guard station, an observation tower, turrets, sentry posts, a beacon tower and a crossbow platform amongst other features.

Visiting Seoul Korea for the first time

Seoul Top Tourist Sites and Attractions
Best time to visit Seoul Korea

The best time, in my opinion, to visit Seoul Korea is from September to October and from March to May to avoid the rainy months.

During autumn and spring, the weather is pleasant and not as humid as the summer months when temperatures are very high and humidity is very unpleasant.

Arriving in Seoul Korea

The good thing about visiting Seoul Korea is that most travelers don’t require a tourist visa.

For instance, travelers from Canada and the United States are not required a tourist visa to enter Korea, although the maximum staying period is six months (Canadians) and three months (US citizens).

If you are visiting Seoul Korea for the first time and are wondering what airport you’ll be landing, you’re likely to land at Incheon International Airport and the arrival area is on the ground floor.

Incheon International Airport (IIA) is the biggest airport in South Korea, and has car rental companies, a taxi line and buses which you can use to get to your destination. However, if you don’t want to pay the hefty taxi airport price, I’d suggest getting an airport bus or the airport express train.

A typical bus fare from the airport to downtown Seoul Korea is around 8,000 SKWon (around $7 or £5), compared to a taxi fare which costs around 50,000SKWon (around $44 or £40)

In fact, the transportation system (taxis, trains and buses) in Seoul Korea is one of the best in the world, reliable, affordable, and the best mode of transportation in the city.

Cultural Tips

If you are visiting Seoul Korea for the first time, be in the know that mannerisms are important here and it is important you know the basics so you don’t start your vacation in Seoul Korea on the wrong foot.

For instance, Koreans as a whole are very proud people with a strong cultural heritage so, it is important to respect their customs. Things such as taking ones shoes off when visiting a Korean home, bowing to someone older than you and adhering to table manners such as not drinking from a soup bowl, are very important to know.

This why learning and finding a bit more about Korean culture before you travel can make the difference between an okay vacation or a fantastic vacation in Seoul Korea.

Enjoy your vacation in Seoul Korea and when visiting Seoul Korea for the first time remember to not feel shy when mingling with the locals as many of them speak English and enjoy the company of tourists.

Making a few friends during your trip in Seoul Korea is truly a great way to make your vacation in Seoul Korea a memorable one.

Have a good trip!
