Interesting places to visit in West Virginia

West Virginia is famously known for its white-water rafting opportunities along the New River and the Gauley River, but as most West Virginians will tell you, the state is more than fun adventurous activities.

In fact, West Virginia is one of the best vacation spots in Mid Atlantic for enjoying all kinda tours such as history and ghost tours. Here it is my top pick of interesting places to visit in West Virginia that you wouldn't want to miss for the world!

Charleston

Charleston is the beating heart of the state and a great starting point to your trip of West Virginia. The capital city of Charleston is certainly one of the most interesting places to visit in West Virginia and a great place to learn more about the state's history.

Two of the most interesting things about Charleston, it’s that it is home to the largest dome in the states - West Virginia State Capitol. The city also boasts an identical Liberty Bell to the one in Philadelphia.

Wheeling

The town of Wheeling is on my list of interesting places to visit in West Virginia because of Oglebay Park, which is an amazing place to explore with the family.

Oglebay is simply like no other town park because it boasts so many attractions such as the beautiful Oglebay Institute Mansion Museum. Apart from mini-golf and a zoo, the park has stunning gardens that you can stroll in complete peace, as well as a lake where you can feed the ducks and take a paddle-boat tour with the kids.

By the way, if you’re wondering where Wheeling is, it’s actually very closely bordered by Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Canaan Valley & Blackwater Falls

If you love the outdoors and being surrounded by pristine scenery, the Monongahela National Forest is a beautiful gem that is surely worthy of a spot on the top 10 natural wonders in the USA.

Within the forest, you'l find two of the best spots for outdoor pursuits in West Virginia, Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls state parks. You can do anything from hiking and canoeing, and check out natural attractions such as waterfalls and canyons.

Canaan Valley state park and Blackwater Falls state parks are also two of the best places to see the fall foliage in WV (between early October and early November).

Moundsville

I added the town of Moundsville to my list of interesting places to visit in West Virginia because of the 2,000 year-old ancient Indian burial mounds, and the 19th century former West Virginia Penitentiary.

Just like the Alcatraz Penitentiary in San Francisco in California. The tour of West Virginia Pen is particularly very interesting because of the rare opportunity to tour a state penitentiary, but most sinisterly, because of the dark history of the penitentiary.

If you’re visiting the town of Wheeling, it would be a good idea to add the town of Moundsville to your itinerary, as both towns are 20 minutes drive apart.

Harpers Ferry

If you’re interested in Civil War Tours, one of the most interesting places to visit in West Virginia is Harpers Ferry which was the battlefield for the bloody ‘Battle of Harpers Ferry’ in 1862.

If you’re looking to seriously explore the town, the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center is the best place to plan your tour of Harpers Ferry.

Another of the interesting things to do in Harpers Ferry it’s to take a Ghost Tour of Harpers Ferry to learn more about the ghost legends and the history of the town.

If you do plan to visit Harpers Ferry, the town is actually on the border with Virginia and Maryland, and within driving distance of Washington DC and Baltimore MD.

Parkersburg

Parkersburg is one of the crown jewel cities along the Ohio River, and a city that offers so much to see and do.

Parkersburg is definitely on my list of interesting places to visit in West Virginia because of the history tours available.

For instance, the Blennerhassett Island tour includes a wagon ride and a tour of the mansion, and it is really a fun way to enjoy an interesting day out learning about the lives of Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett.

Parkersburg is also one of the best Halloween destinations in the states because of ghost tours such as Haunted Parkersburg ghost tours which take you to places said to be home to demons and spirits.
