If you're planning on touring North Carolina this year, and are wondering what top attractions and popular things to do and see in the state in a short period of time, find below a nice handy list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina that you can't afford not visiting!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is, without a doubt, one of biggest natural attractions in the states, spanning over the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

The park is also one of the top 10 natural wonders in USA because of the amount of natural attractions such as waterfalls, gorges and mountain peaks.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is certainly on my list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina and one of the top vacation spots in Southern USA.

If you’re traveling to North Carolina this autumn to enjoy the fall foliage, one of the best ways to experience the fiery fall colors in the Smoky Mountains Park is by taking a scenic drive along Blue Ridge Parkway.

If you do visit the Parkway, don’t forget to visit the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area to learn more about Blue Ridge history and Cherokee culture.

Wilmington

The city of Wilmington NC is also on my list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina because of awesome Battleship North Carolina.

If you’re in the Wilmington area and are looking for fun things to do with the family, you really don’t want to miss visiting this historic World War II battleship.

You’ll be able to climb the stair cases to access the top-level decks and gain entry to the sleeping quarters, kitchen to see actual equipment used by the sailors.

While in the city, you may also want to make time to explore Wilmington Historic District on a popular horse-drawn carriage tour to really appreciate the beautiful buildings and historic houses.

Southport

If you’re basing your holiday in Wilmington NC, the small and sleepy town of Southport makes for a great day trip if you want to getaway from the crowds, as it’s only 30 minutes drive south of Wilmington.

Apart from being a quite retreat, Southport NC to my list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina because of Old Smithville Burying Ground, which is a 300 hundred-year old grave-yard where many notables are buried.

This graveyard is truly like something out of a horror movies so it's one of the best Halloween destinations.

Also, the graveyard isn't one you’re likely to come across very often as it features century-old headstones and ancient oak trees.

Pleasure Island

Pleasure Island is one of the best beach destinations in North Carolina, no doubt, because of the stunning beaches of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach which boast miles of stunning shoreline.

If you’re looking to getaway this summer with the kids, you’re a sure to love Pleasure Island’s pristine beaches.

Pleasure Island is also on my list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina because of Fort Fisher which includes both a Historic Site and an aquarium.

If you’ve never been to a confederate fort before, Fort Fisher is a great opportunity to explore the inside of a fort and experience Civil War reenactments.

Carteret County

If you’re looking to explore North Carolina Outer Banks, Carteret County is home to some of the most interesting places to visit in North Carolina.

The Croatan National Forest is in itself a magnificent place if you want to experience wilderness camping. If you are also a flora and fauna enthusiast you’d love exploring every bit of the forest.

Other interesting places to visit in the area include the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the North Carolina Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores and the Emerald Island and Harkers Island lighthouses.

Cape Lookout National Seashore

Cape Lookout National Seashore is on my list of interesting places to visit in North Carolina because of the miles of undeveloped shoreline, wild life and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you do plan on visiting Cape Lookout Seashore, I’d suggest doing cabin rental for a couple days to take in all the sights and stunning views. Believe me, you won’t regret it!
