Places to Visit in Wilmington NC

Places to Visit in Wilmington NC
Looking for places to visit in Wilmington NC?

You’ll be surprised to learn that Wilmington North Carolina isn’t just a great beach vacation spot in the summer but also one of the top places to visit along the coast of USA.

If you’re wondering what Wilmington offers besides the beach, there are many historic buildings that you can explore, museums that you can visit and tourist attractions that the whole family can enjoy such as Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park where you can enjoy fun water slides.

Other places to visit in Wilmington NC that you can add to your list of things to do include:

Wilmington Old Town

Taking a walking tour of Wilmington old town. In the old part of town, you’ll find many historic buildings and monuments such as the bronze statue of George Davis, the Confederate Memorial, the Cotton Exchange shopping complex and Bellamy Mansion.

Bellamy Mansion, in particular, is an interesting place to visit because you can get a glimpse of how life would’ve been back in the late 1800's. You can watch a short movie about the Bellamy Mansion and then take a self-guided tour through the different rooms and the slave quarters.

Battleship North Carolina

Exploring Battleship North Carolina is definitely one of the most enjoyable places to visit in Wilmington NC, whether you’re a history buff or not.

You can easily spend a few hours at this attraction exploring all of the different areas of the ship such as the barbershop, kitchen, etc, and learn about the role of the ship during WWII.

Wilmington Railroad Museum

This museum is located on the grounds of Cape Fear Community College, and it’s a fantastic place to visit with the whole family.

There is a real-size 1900’s steam locomotive and a red caboose at the premise, as well as a scaled railroad where you can see miniature trains zooming around the train tracks.

Cape Fear Riverboats

If you’re looking for different ways to explore Wilmington NC, there is no better way than taking a boat tour along Cape Fear River to get a different perspective of the city.

Cape Fear Riverboats is located just across the river from Battleship North Carolina, and it’s here where you can book river boat tours, or a romantic dinner cruise with your loved one.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science

Cape Fear Museum is also located in the old part of Wilmington, two blocks down the road from Bellamy Mansion Museum.

This museum is actually the oldest one in the whole of North Carolina and it's one of the best places to visit in Wilmington NC where the whole family can have a fun day out. Even if you think you don’t like museums, you’ll enjoy the various natural exhibits and dioramas about Cape Fear history.

Wilmington Children's Museum

If you’re visiting the city and are looking for places to visit in Wilmington NC with kids, the Wilmington Children's Museum is another must-add attraction on the list of things to do in Wilmington with kids.

The museum, located opposite the Community Arts Center, is set up like a preschool so it offers different playing areas. Also, the museum holds fun activities like treasure hunt and cooking classes where kids can interact with each other.

Cape Fear Serpentarium

The Serpentarium is located on the same street as the children’s museum and it is another cool place you can visit with the family (that is if you don't mind snakes) checking out all kinds of poisonous snakes and exotic reptiles.

Interesting places to visit in New Hampshire

Interesting places to visit in New Hampshire
New Hampshire is somewhat under the radar of many travelers and somewhat overshadow by popular neighbours such as Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

New Hampshire is truly one of the hidden gems in New England, sharing many similarities with other New England states like stunning natural scenery, slower pace of life, wealth of cultural attractions and beautiful beaches such as Hampton Beach New Hampshire.

Having said this, New Hampshire does boast attractions of its own such as being home to the highest peak in New England and one of the most beautiful memorial site - Cathedral of the Pines historic Site.

This site actually includes two memorials - the “Altar of the Nation” memorial and the Women’s memorial Belltower in the town of Rindge.

As promised, I am sharing some of my favorite places to visit in New Hampshire that you may want to add to your New Hampshire itinerary.

Canterbury

If you’ve always wanted to visit one of the Shaker Villages in New England, New Hampshire is one of the best places to do this.

I added Canterbury to the list of interesting places to visit in New Hampshire because of the Canterbury Shaker Village, which is one of the best preserved and authentic Shaker Villages you’ll ever come across.

The Canterbury Shaker Village really gives an interesting insight into life in the early 19th century as buildings haven't got modern amenities. The best thing about the village is that you can enjoy fun tours and watch traditional crafts events to see how things were made back then.

White Mountains National Forest

New Hampshire boasts pristine natural scenery and there is no better place to appreciate this than at the White Mountains National Forest (worthy of a place on the list of top 10 natural wonders in USA).

The White Mountains National Forest isn’t only one of the best places to see fall foliage in New England, but also a great place visit all year around because of the opportunities for recreational activities like hiking, climbing, wildlife spotting and scenic drives along route 302.

White Mountains National Forest is also on my list of interesting places to visit in New Hampshire because of the stunning views you can get from the summit of Mount Avalon.

Lake Winnipesaukee

I think that Lake Winnipesaukee has to be one of the most interesting places to visit in New Hampshire, and one of the top places to vacation with kids on the east coast..

Apart from being able to enjoy water activities like swimming, kayaking and cruising tours, you can enjoy plenty of other fun activities like horseback riding, go karting, bowling and mini-golf.

Portsmouth

The town of Portsmouth is another of the interesting places to visit in New Hampshire because of Portsmouth’s maritime importance and historic buildings.

The town is one of the oldest seaports in the states with a variety of 17th and 18th century structures such as Strawbery Banke Museum.

While in Portsmouth, you may also want to visit the beautiful flower garden at Prescott Park, and enjoy the lovely views of Piscataqua River and the pier.

Mount Washington

I added Mount Washington to the list of interesting palces to visit in New Hampshire, not only because Mt. Washington is the highest peak in New England, but also because Mount Washington Cog Railway is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway.

If you’ve ever wanted to get onboard a steam train (like me) the Cog Railway is also steam-powered, and it’s truly an amazing experience!

Concord

The capital of New Hampshire is another interesting place if you’re a history buff as it is here where you’ll find the New Hampshire State Capitol Building and many important statues.

However, while in Concord you can also enjoy fun activities like visiting the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center which has to be one of the most interesting places to visit in New Hampshire, hands-down!

The Discovery Center has a myriad of interesting attractions for everyone and interactive exhibits for a fun day out. There are hands-on activities for absolutely all ages like building rockets and enjoying the fun space travel simulator.

Interesting places to visit in Delaware

Delaware might be one of the smallest states in the US but the state certainly boasts an interesting history being the First State.

Interesting places to visit in Delaware
Historical places to visit in Delaware
The state also oozes pristine scenery and some of the best beaches in US, which is why Delaware is one of my favorite vacation spots in Mid Atlantic. Add to this, Delaware’s great location and no sales tax, you truly have one of the best places to visit on the east coast of USA.

Delaware is closely bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland, and if you’re staying in Wilmington Delaware, you’re only a short drive from places like Philadelphia, Baltimore Maryland and Atlantic City in New Jersey. Find below, in no particular order, some of my favorite and interesting places to visit in Delaware:

Rehoboth Beach Town

If you’re traveling to Delaware in the summer with the family, Rehoboth Beach town is one of the coolest places to hang out because of the shopping, nightlife and dining opportunities, as well as the fun boardwalk attractions.

However, apart from the many things to do, Rehoboth Beach is one of the most interesting places to visit in Delaware because of the 20 colorful-themed dolphin sculptures scattered around the town, which make such a great picture-taking opportunity.

Lewes

Lewes is probably my favorite spot to hang out in southern Delaware, as opposed to Rehoboth Beach because of the town’s slower pace of life, ideal for a relaxing vacation getaway.

Lewes is also on my list of interesting places to visit in Delaware because of Lewes’ charming shops and historic buildings and attractions such as the Zwaanendael Museum located in the downtown area.

Apart from exploring this pleasant and charming town, you can take a short ferry ride from Lewes Breakwater Harbor to Cape May in New Jersey and explore attractions like the Whale & Dolphin Watch Research Center and Cape May Lighthouse.

Delaware City

Delaware City is, certainly, on my list of interesting places to visit in Delaware because of historic Fort Delaware, located within the Fort Delaware State Park.

Whether you’re interested in Civil War history or not, you’ll find the fort an interesting place to explore because of the interesting reenactments at the fort and artillery demonstrations.

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge

Prime Hook Refuge is an amazing place to visit if you’re a nature lover and want to enjoy fun outdoor activities like canoeing and a fall foliage tour.

The main reason why I added Prime Hook Refuge to the list of interesting places to visit in Delaware is because the refuge serves as stopping point for migrating birds during the spring and fall so you get a marvellous opportunity to observe all kinds of birds.

Georgetown

Georgetown is located west of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach town, and it’s another destination worth adding to the list of interesting places to visit in Delaware because of the 16 Mile Brewing Company.

If you’re a beer aficionado, or are simply interested in the beer-making process, you can enjoy a tour of the premises, and check out how it’s all done.

Dover

Dover is a charming small town with lovely period buildings located along historic State Street.

Dover is another of my interesting places to visit in Delaware because of the Air Mobility Command Museum, and also because it was in Dover where the US constitution was first ratified, so the town has a great historic significance.

In fact, the actual building where the US constitution was ratified can be found along State Street.

The Air Mobility Command Museum is one of the most fun attractions in Dover because of the cool flight simulator and other interesting exhibits.

If you're vacationing with kids, the Air Command Museum is one attraction they'll be sure to enjoy!

Interesting places to visit in Ohio

Things to do in the Midwest
Planning a trip this year to Ohio, and want to know about interesting places to visit in Ohio that you wouldn’t want to miss?

In a nutshell, Ohio is stunning state with lovely countryside scenery, rich history, beautiful architecture, wealth of historic sites and friendly locals.

Ohio is one of the best vacation spots in the Midwest for taking historic tours, and exploring this state will leave you with lovely lasting memories.

Put-in-Bay

First on my list of interesting places to visit in Ohio is the small island of Put-in-Bay where you’ll find the Perry Monument. I added this place on my list because of the interesting history behind this landmark.

You can climb to the top of the monument and get nice views of Put-in-Bay town and the bay.

By the way, Put-in-Bay is easily reached by ferry from Sandusky in less than 50 minutes, and the trip here is overall worth it because of the charming little town.

Sandusky

The city of Sandusky is one of the little gems in Ohio, with a rich history and beautiful historical buildings.

Sandusky is, roughly, the half way point between Toledo Ohio and Cleveland OH, and it is one place you should really add to your Ohio itinerary. I added Sandusky to the list of interesting places to visit in Ohio for a couple reasons.
Places to go in Ohio
First, if you’re taking a walking tour of the city, you’ll notice that the manhole covers in the city are beautifully decorated, which can be easily mistaken for ancient Mayan calendar stones! Second, Sandusky is home to Cedar Point Amusement Park which has to be one of the best amusement parks in the states. The coasters are awesome and the park is truly a thrill seekers paradise.

Berlin

If you’re looking for the most interesting places to visit in Ohio, the Amish Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin Ohio comes close to the top. Just like the Illinois’ Amish Country, the Amish Mennonite Heritage Center is a great place to see a way of life, forgotten by most of us.

If you’ve always wanted to learn about the Amish, the center offers tours and interesting videos.

Cincinnati & Milan

Ohio is certainly home to many historic homes – many of them turned into museums now. Cincinnati & Milan are perhaps two of the most interesting places to visit in Ohio for a history tour.

A few of the places to check out in Cincinnati include: Harriet Beecher Stowe House, Taft Museum Of Art and William Howard Taft National Historic Site. While in Milan, you can check out Edison Birthplace, which is now a museum, and the Milan Historical Museum.

Dayton

A visit to Ohio wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Park, in Dayton OH. The park is truly one of the most interesting places to visit in Ohio because of the interpretive centers where you can learn more about the men who invented the first practical air plane, and how they envision the idea.

Chillicothe

I added Chillicothe to my list of interesting places to visit in Ohio because of the Indian Mounds found here.

Also, if you’re in the city of Columbus OH, the town of Chillicothe is just under an hour’s drive south of Columbus so, you can easily add this place on the list of fun things to do in Columbus Ohio. The actual Indian Mounds are found at the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park where you can take a tour and learn more about the Hopewell.

Hocking State Forest

If you are traveling to Ohio in late October, or are planning a vacation in November, you should not miss experiencing the beautiful color change in the state. Normally, the last week of October and early November is when the foliage colors are at their peak.

Ohio is actually one of the best places to see fall foliage because most of its state parks have a watchtower you can climb up such as the one in Hocking Hills State Park, in Logan.

Portsmouth

The small town feel of Portsmouth OH is another of my interesting places to visit in Ohio, simply because of the beautiful Floodwall Murals.

The murals are painted on a 2,000 feet long wall along Front Street, and are simply ‘stunning’, also colorful and so intricately detailed that you’ll be blown away by them. If you do visit the Floodwall Murals, don’t forget your camera!
